In seems like every year a new diet trend hits the market and tons of people jump on board thinking…finally the perfect diet! Whether it’s Atkins, South Beach, Paleo, Vegan or the Raw Food Diet, everybody thinks they have it figured out. What many people forgot is that we are all different. We have different blood types, different genetics and live in different climates. Saying that one diet is perfect for all mankind is simply just not realistic. In this post I’d like to cover one of the most popular ways of eating right now which is referred to as Ketogenic.

It’s really simple actually, by eliminating carbs from your diet and only eating foods rich in protein and mostly fat, you force your body to stop running on sugar (carbs) and start running on fats (ketones). By doing this your body begins to burn the fat that normally stores around your waist.

What Can You Eat on Keto?

Let’s cover the animal foods first. Any type of red meat, chicken, pork or fish and eggs is fine. The higher fat the better. As for plants, the higher fat nuts like macadamia nuts, walnuts and pine nuts are recommended, but cashews and peanuts are not due to their higher carb makeup. As for fruits, avocados and small amounts of dark berries with low sugar content. Greens are really the only vegetable allowed because they are low carb and contain fiber.

What Can’t You Eat on Keto?

Basically think or all the carbs you love, like bread, pasta, rice, cake, cookies, crackers, muffins, tortillas, and get rid of them. Yes, I know that sounds extreme, but if you can make it through the adjustment period which takes about 3 days, it’s well worth it.

Is The Ketogenic Diet Right For You?

Thats really only a question you can answer. There are many benefits to keto like weight loss, increased stable energy, no crashing, healthier skin just to name a few. On the other hand there are a few negatives like the social aspect and expenses. It can be difficult and isolating if you are the only one in your social circle that is eating this way and we all know that high quality animal foods are a lot more expensive than rice, bread and other carbs.
